Changing Driving Instructors Mid-Course: What You Need to Know

Let’s be honest, this is not a fun discussion to have. You have already done a few lessons, you have paid for them, and anything about it just is not working. Maybe you cannot quite put your figure on what it is. So you keep going, week after week, informing yourself it will click finally. Sometimes it does. Usually it does not.

Here’s what nobody really tells learners: swapping instructors mid-course is far more common than people assume, and it doesn’t mean you’ve failed at anything or that you’re being difficult. It just means the pairing wasn’t right. So if you’ve been sitting there wondering whether it’s too late to change, or worried it’ll set you back weeks, it won’t  and here’s what’s actually involved.

Is It Normal to Switch Instructors?

Yes. More normal than you’d think, actually. And most of the time, it is got nothing to do with either person doing anything wrong.

Two people can both be exactly good at what they do and still not work well together. Maybe your instructor talks a mile a minute when you are already pressured and just need a second to inhale . Maybe they are too laid-back and you did actually prefer a bit more structure. Sometimes there is no personality clash at all; they relocate, their diary stops matching yours, or you move house and the drive to meet them ends up longer than the lesson itself.

Most instructors are fine with this, for what it’s worth. A decent one would rather you go off and actually learn well with someone else than sit through lessons that go nowhere just to keep you on their books. At the end of the day, they want you to pass safely, and that matters more to them than the booking.

Signs You May Need a New Driving Instructor

One dodgy lesson doesn’t mean much.everyone has an off day, and nerves alone can turn a totally fine lesson into anything that feels like a disaster by the time you are driving home. What is actually worth paying focus to is a pattern that pulls over a few weeks, not one bad Tuesday.

Are you making the same mistakes lesson after lesson, with nobody really explaining why? Do you leave feeling more rattled than when you turned up, rather than gradually steadier? Is your instructor doing most of the talking, without ever really checking whether any of it landed?

Lessons that keep getting cancelled or cut short with barely any warning is another one worth noting, especially once it stops being a one-off and starts being the norm. And honestly, if you don’t feel comfortable enough to say “sorry, I didn’t get that, can you say it again,” that alone is worth sitting with, because that back-and-forth is basically how you actually learn to drive well.

How to Actually Switch Instructors

Good news  there is no contract chaining you to one person. The process is a many less complicated than it feels in your head.

And if it helps, drop your instructor a line letting him or her know that you have decided to move up the academic ladder. You don’t owe anyone paragraphs of justification. Before you go, though, it’s worth double-checking whether you’ve got any prepaid lessons or leftover credit sitting with them. Most instructors run things pay-as-you-go or in blocks, and you don’t want to lose money over a switch you’re entitled to make anyway.

Some people ask their old instructor for a quick rundown of what’s been covered so far. It’s not essential, but it can save your new instructor a bit of time working you out. After that, you just book in with someone new. Most will kick off with a short assessment drive to see where you’re actually at, rather than assuming you’re starting completely from scratch. You do not need to justify anything you do here. You have paid for the classes, not a wedding.

Will Switching Set You Back?

This is usually the real fear  that you’ll lose all your progress and end up back at square one. In practice, it rarely plays out that way.A good instructor can get a strong read on your level within a single lesson and pick things up from there. Quite a few learners actually find they progress faster after switching, Simply because lessons stop feeling like a task and start feeling worth showing up for.

One thing that must truly be mentioned straightaway is your test date if you already have it arranged previously. This way your new instructor will plan out your future lessons accordingly rather than having to rush two weeks later

It’s also worth recalling that a bit of overlap or recurrence isn’t the end of the world. A new instructor might go back over something you’ve technically covered before, just to see it for themselves. That’s not wasted time; it’s them making sure nothing’s been missed, which is honestly a good sign.

Choosing the Right Instructor the Second Time Around

If you are going to the problem of changing, it’s worth being a bit more deliberate about who comes next. A quick call before committing to a block of lessons tells you more than you’d expect  how they explain things, whether they’ve got patience for nervous learners if that’s you, how they react when something isn’t clicking straight away.

Of course, one should also consider some practical aspects beforehand: how flexible is their schedule, are they going to cover all of the areas in which you will have to take the exam, and what will happen if a lesson is cancelled suddenly?. None of that was awkward to ask. If anything, an instructor worth having won’t mind explaining how they work.

At Astra Driving School, our instructors each teach a bit differently; some are especially good with nervous learners, others run fast-tracked intensive courses for people working to a deadline.

Quick FAQ

Do I need to give my current instructor notice before switching?

Not officially, no. But it’s decent manners, especially if there’s prepaid credit or a regular slot to sort out first.

Will switching instructors affect my test date?

Not usually  as long as your new instructor knows the date early and can build lessons around it. If your test’s coming up fast, it’s worth picking someone with the availability to fit you in properly.

Can I switch instructors more than once?

Yes, there is no cap on it. Most people find the right fit after one change, but nothing stops you trying again if it is not still clicking.
