The best way to get an earlier driving test is to check the official GOV.UK booking service yourself for cancellations, at different times of day, and be flexible about the date and test centre. Since 2026, only you can book or change your test, and you can only change it twice, so it pays to plan.
This guide explains the new DVSA booking rules and practical ways learners in Greater Manchester find earlier tests.
The DVSA Booking Rules That Changed in 2026
- From 31 March 2026: only 2 changes. You can change your test booking twice. Changing the date, time or centre, and swapping, all count.
- From 12 May 2026: only the learner can book. Only the person taking the test can book, change, cancel or swap it. Instructors, family members and paid booking or cancellation-finder services can no longer do it for you.
- From 9 June 2026: the 3 nearest centres. If you move your test, you can only move it to your original centre or one of the 3 nearest centres to it.
The DVSA made these changes to stop people using bots and reselling tests at inflated prices. It has cancelled tests and suspended licence numbers linked to reselling, so never pay anyone to book a test for you.
How to Find an Earlier Test
- Book a test as soon as you are close to ready. Having a booking gives you something to move forward. Ask your instructor when you are likely to be ready before you book.
- Check for cancellations regularly. Other learners cancel and change tests every day, and those slots go back on the GOV.UK service. Early mornings and late evenings are good times to look.
- Be flexible on time. Early-morning slots and less popular days are easier to find.
- Think about the nearest centres. Greater Manchester has nine test centres. If you learn in south Manchester, West Didsbury, Sale and Bredbury may all be within reach. See every centre and its pass rate in our Manchester test centres guide.
- Use your 2 changes carefully. Don’t use a change to move a few days. Save it for a real improvement.
- Tell your instructor straight away. Your test is in their car, so check they are free before you confirm a new slot.
Changing or Cancelling: The Notice You Need
You need to give at least 3 full working days’ notice to change or cancel your test without losing the fee. The fee is £62 on weekdays and £75 for evenings, weekends and bank holidays. Read more in our guide to the driving test price.
Don’t Rush Into a Test You’re Not Ready For
An earlier test is only useful if you pass it. If you fail, you have to wait at least 10 working days and find another slot, which can take far longer than waiting for the right date.
While you wait, keep learning. A short intensive course before your test date, or a few extra lessons on the roads near your test centre, makes the most of the time.
